Westport Explorers
The Westport Fire Explorer Post 774 is a scouting-based organization for young adults ages 14-18 who have an interest in careers in the fire service. The program provides an introduction to various fire and ems based training along with life skills and leadership opportunities. Explorers are mentored into the field and gain a background in firefighting/EMS skills, leadership, and community service.
Explorers who have graduated from the program have gone on to become career and call firefighters, paramedics, 911 operators and emergency management personnel. Meetings are weekly at the Westport Fire Department with a one-time registration fee of $100 to join. Applicants go through an interview process and are required to meet certain criteria such as grade point averages, school disciplinary history, and character references to be selected into the program. The annual enrollment period is August to September with preference given to town residents. Applicants may be placed on a waiting list if the program is at full capacity.
